If you should go skating…

If you should go skating…

This entry is part 11 of 13 in the series In the raising of an Adventurer - Europe 2025

27 December 2025

We started off the day taking a walk to the Grote Markt, a Saturday markey on a square in Haarlem. Yes, yes – we do have a rental car, but because it can be difficult to figure out where to park, we figured we may as well do the 15 minute walk. It felt way more than 15 minutes, in the end. Only to find that the market did not actually sell Poffertjes – the one thing we were definitely hoping to find.

We also read about the market on the Museumplein in Amsterdam. So we decided to take the bus. And of course – the biggest attraction ended up being the ice skating. So we patiently sat and watched Jean (and others) going round in circles, whilst not always managing to stay on their feet. One lady spent more time in a horizontal position than anything else. Yet she bravely persisted. I didn’t judge. I preferred to not revisit a skill that I was once merely marginally acceptable at.

After bribing Jean to leave the ice, we took a stroll in the market. Poffertjes! We found Poffertjes. So now, finally content with Poffertjies in belly, we decided to either find a restaurant, and then make our way back home, or find our way home first, and then find food. But by now it wasn’t only very cold, but it also started to rain, albeit ever so slightly. But that was enough – we very quickly decided to take the Bolt option, and in no time, we were safely and warmly back in our accommodation. Take-outs it would have to be. In fact – Bitterballen take-outs. And, oh man! Was that good!

Weather for tomorrow does not really look like it will let up on the cold. I was hoping for some snow, but that also seems to be elluding us. We’ll just have to come back for that. 🙂
