Narrow streets of cobblestone

This entry is part 7 of 17 in the series Puglia on a whim - Italy 2024

Today, we walked, walked, and walked again. Our accommodation is towards the top of the hill on which the Sassi is situated. And, of course, there are many pathways, streets, alleys, and stairways that can lead you down to the lower parts. It does not really matter which way you go, you can be assured of two things.

  • If you go down, you have to get yourselves back up again, and that is steep, and exhausting
  • It is stunning.

So I could either give you a rather lengthy history lesson, which you could probably find by just Googling Matera. Or I could just show you how beautiful it is here, by posting some photos. I think I will do the latter.

Vistas after sunset:

It’s our last night in Matera, and supper was at a lovely little restaurant with a nice vibe, good food, and wine that doesn’t break the bank. Can I recommend Matera to anyone considering the South of Italy? Without a doubt!
