Creysse is awesome. It is quiet, and remote, and surrounded by beautiful trees, including the walnut trees, cultivated widely in this area. In fact, it is so remote, that connectivity is not really their thing. Our accommodation has no wifi. And the signal on my phone disappears into thin air as soon as I enter our little flat. So I find myself having to put my phone outside somewhere, in my quest to have sufficient connectivity to at least be productive in some way or form.
By early afternoon, I gave up all hope for productivity, and so we ventured out to see whether we might bump into some signals. What we did find was some beautiful old towns.
Les Plus Beaux Villages de France is an association that helps promote tourist appeal for small rural villages in France. It involves a fee of sorts, and requires a certain set of selection criteria in order to get your village to be classified as one of the ‘most beautiful villages’ of France. I’ve seen the sign a few times in this area. And for those villages where I did not spot the sign, I can almost not imagine why they did not make the list. Just about everywhere you look, you spot something peaceful and beautiful.
Niel directed us to Sarlat-la-Canéda, yet another medieval town in the Dordogne area, and it is obviously a very popular tourist destination. It has a lovely pedestrian street running down the middle of the historic center, with quaint alleys branching off it filled with little shops, mostly selling local produce – walnuts and truffles. But popular means busy, and so we soon fled to find something more quiet. And the one place that was still on our list, was Rocamadour.
Oh wow! The GPS was kind enough to lead us to Rocamadour via a pass that ends up on the opposite side of the valley, so you could get a good view of the town.
We chose not to venture into the historic center of the town, but rather stopped for a really good meal at a restaurant close to a view site of the town, which gave me the chance to do get some fairly decent connectivity to do some stuff I needed to do, but also stroll over to the view site a few times, to try and get some photo’s at sunset, and early evening.
Just – wow!
