Peniche is a fishing town and harbour just west of Óbidos. It is a favorite spot for the surfing community.
After a late start, we took a drive to see if we could spot some interesting things in this coastal town. And seeing that fishing is something that generally happens there, we were hoping for some good seafood. Or Niel was, at least.
Peniche has a stunning coastline. You can basically pick – a beautiful long white sandy beach, or fragmented cliffs. From the top of these cliffs you can see Berlenga island.
We spent some time taking in the beauty of the coastline, then watched the multitude of surfers. It was quite amusing to see the newby surfers being either dangerously brave, in an attempt to get the “cool” factor sooner than their fellow learners, or dangerously cautious, barely daring to lift themselves even an inch off their boards.
After that seafood lunch, we headed back to Óbidos for some shopping and a quick drink in a fascinating pub.
Maybe a Monday night is a good one for an early night. Tomorrow we move on to Porto, and there are one or two interesting things to see along the way.
