This is a song for the Captain…

Just outside Keetmanshoop there is a signpost that claims that it is exactly 500km to Windhoek. This is our agenda for the day. And with the help of some good music on the trusted iPod, it should be a breeze.

We usually set the iPad on shuffle, and enjoy the random song choices it throws at us. But then a song from one of our favourite South African bands started playing, and instinctively we both reached for the “Unshuffle” button.

The landscape en route to Windhoek changes often, but mostly remains vast open plains,  and causes you to start thinking quite a bit, and the voice of Southern Gypsy Queen’s late drummer took our minds to fond memories of dear young people who were taken from us way too soon.  I couldn’t help but send a telepathic hug to some dear friends who have had to deal with the tragic loss of a child.

This has definitely been a day of reflection. We turned in to get a glimpse at the Hardap Dam, just outside Mariental, and driving through the hilly area, I suddenly felt cramped in. After spending so many hours driving through such vast open plains, the hills suddenly felt so very imposing. That’s how life is, isn’t it. We allow ourselves to be limited so easily, and only when you step outside of what you prefer and feel comfortable in, do you sometimes realise what you are capable of. I still prefer green, but dry is also okay now.

In Windhoek, we did a quick walk-about of the city centre, with the Christus Kirche being the most striking building.  And then, as per so many recommendations, we had supper at Joe’s Beerhouse. I can see why so many people would love this place. It certainly has a great deal of character. I suspect perhaps we were rather longing to be in nature.

Some walk the Camino in order to do some soul-searching. Namibia seems to have it’s own way of forcing you to reflect a little.

You’re deeply missed, Ruan, Paul and Jeanne.
