Is this the real life…

This entry is part 23 of 23 in the series Legends, Bohemians & Bratwurst - Europe 2013

29 August 2013.

It’s hard to believe that we once had a ‘normal’ life. Yet we suddenly realise that, very soon, we will return to that life.

We start our last day with the usual city tour. Our guide is hilarious, and loves telling us about how ineffective the Czechs are at fighting in wars, yet somehow always find themselves on the winning side, and therefore deploying their best resources, the military band, to celebrate victory. The Czech’s also don’t quite agree with the laws of the European Union. They are slightly upset about the fact that they now have to call their strawberry marmalade a jam, because a marmalade can only be orange or lemon. So now they not only sell strawberry jam, but also orange and lemon jams.

The highlight of our tour is a visit to the Prague Castle and St Vitus Cathedral. The latter took 600 years to finish, and is probably the most defining landmark of the Prague skyline.

No matter how you plan to make your last day a relaxed one, you always end up having to rush around for last-minute gifts. We spent quite some time at a market that sells mostly souvenirs, but also stopped for a quick lunch before we eventually gave up and returned to our hotel. The signs were clear. It was time to go home.

After some farewell drinks with some of our new friends, we headed back into the city for a final supper at a lovely restaurant near the Charles Bridge. We reflected on the last three magical weeks, trying to decide on highlights. We both agree – if we had to pick a city to live in, it would be Vienna. But as far as highlights went, each city had it’s own special features, that prevented it from being any less of a highlight than the others. Would we change anything? Probably not. Would we have wanted to see more? Don’t we always? All the more reason to return then. 🙂

Our return flights would start at 06h30, but it means that we would be home by 21h30. A long day, but we would be happy to be back to reality.

You, you may say
I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one
I hope some day you’ll join us
And the world will live as one
